About Liz Sheffield
A Writer at Age 9
Liz Sheffield has been putting words on the page since she was nine years old. Her first publication was The Story of Roller and Skate – a captivating tale about the tumultuous friendship between two roller skates. Liz was so committed to her story, she illustrated and self-published it (on craft paper) so that others could learn from this modern fable about friendship.
Serving as the editor of her high school newspaper and graduating with a bachelor’s degree in English from Whitman College, Liz continued to explore how she could use words to share compelling stories, and to educate others. Upon graduating from college, Liz moved to Japan where she lived for three years, working as an English language teacher in public junior and senior high schools.
When she returned to the United States, Liz worked for small businesses focused on international trade. She utilized the Japanese language skills she had acquired and also learned the nuts and bolts of importing and exporting various goods to and from Asia. But Liz found that in her spare time she was creating employee handbooks and onboarding training, as well as doing her best to create a better work environment for herself and her co-workers during the day. Through these experiences, Liz realized that the people side of the business was where she belonged.
A Background in Human Resources
After completing a 9-month program at the University of Washington Extension, Liz earned a Training Specialist Certificate and was immediately hired by Starbucks as a human resources (HR) coordinator for the retail division. During the following 11 years, Liz held a variety of roles under the HR umbrella at Starbucks. She was responsible for designing and developing training programs about management skills, leadership practices, staffing, hiring and creating a great work environment.
As the training manager responsible for company-wide ethics and compliance training, Liz administered a learning management system that delivered and tracked compliance modules to employees around the globe. With Liz’s efforts, the completion rates for these modules met or exceeded federal requirements. Twice during her career with Starbucks, Liz was honored with the distinction of receiving a Spirit of Starbucks Award.
A Beautiful Blend
Liz left the world of coffee to launch her copywriting business because she had a desire to blend her skills as a writer and as an HR professional. In her corporate experience, Liz saw the need for a writer who understands the difference between employee relations and employee relationships…and how both impact the workplace. As a copywriter working for HR service providers Liz finds great personal satisfaction in helping her clients deliver clear messages through social media, case studies, white papers, training materials and other forms of copy.
A Balanced Life
Liz lives near Seattle, Washington with her husband and two sons. When she’s not writing, Liz enjoys spending time with her family – playing UNO, going for family bike rides, and cheering for her sons at various sporting events.
